“Grandma, why don’t you plant carrots anymore?”

“I don’t want to talk about it.”

“That’s a weird thing not to want to talk about, Grandma.”

“Where’d your mother go?”

“I think she went inside.”

Grandma hustled over to the house, leaving Jill, her granddaughter in the garden.

Her daughter, Ruth, met her on the back porch.

“Ruth, I thought I told you to forbid her from asking me about the carrots.”

“Mom, I don’t understand why you’re so superstitious about this.”
