Joan lays her head on the table. She is in the cafeteria at work. She works at the type of work where they have a cafeteria and not a lunch room.
This is Joan’s first time eating in the cafeteria. Usually, she eats at her desk.
New policy. No one is to eat lunch at their desk anymore.
The cafeteria cooks are overwhelmed today. The new policy is hardest on them.
Joan lifts up her head and watches her favorite coworker, Julia, eat a ham sandwich. Julia doesn’t eat with her mouth closed. This is new information for Joan. She wonders what other information she will find out about Julia now that they will be eating lunch together in the cafeteria.
A cook quits. Middle finger to the boss. Storms out.
Joan looks on, jealous of the man.
No one else seems to notice.
Joan quits too.
She doesn’t walk out. She won’t leave the job for another 9 months.
But Joan quits all the same.
